Why the Emerging Designers Competition Matters to Washington, D.C.

For the past four years, since transitioning TYGERIANLACE from Charlotte, NC, to the vibrant, dynamic hub of Washington, D.C., I’ve been privileged to meet countless talented designers and creatives. These interactions have not only inspired me but have solidified my belief in the importance of providing meaningful opportunities and resources to others along their design journeys. Washington, D.C., is more than monuments and politics; it is a melting pot of culture, creativity, and innovation. Yet, so many designers here often lack access to the tools and platforms needed to propel their work forward. This competition is my way of amplifying their voices and showcasing the untapped potential of our local creative community.

Throughout my journey, I’ve been fortunate to acquire skills, resources, and experiences that have shaped my career as a designer. Now, I’m in a position to share these tools with others who are as passionate and determined. The Emerging Designers Competition is my way of paying it forward—a chance to create spaces where creativity thrives, connections are built, and new doors are opened. By investing in these designers, we’re investing in the future of fashion and art—a future that is inclusive, innovative, and reflective of diverse voices.

The Emerging Designers Competition isn’t just an event; it’s a movement. It embodies boldness, diversity, collaboration, and innovation—the very qualities I want to see more of in the fashion industry. It’s a space where designers can debut collections that reflect their authentic voices, free from the pressures of conformity. By hosting this competition in Washington, D.C., I’m leading with and for the people who inspire me daily. Together, we can redefine what it means to be a designer and creative in our city and beyond, shaping the future of fashion one collection at a time.
